Do you listen to the signs your body gives you?

Do you know how to recognise the language your mind and body use to communicate with you?

This week I decided to stop being so stubborn, listen to the signs I have been ignoring and give my body a rest.

After running 18k in the Glass House Mountains and finding myself at the back of the group and struggling to keep up, I eventually got the message.

Just resting is a bit of a challenge for me so I am using my “week off”  running to re-introduce myself to YOGA.

I have a number of DVD’s and am using these to get ‘in the flow’ and feeling better already.

Yoga is good for mind, body and spirit and especially good for runners!

Yoga is good for mind, body and spirit and especially good for runners!

‘My first foray with Yoga was in the 1970’s.  Our teacher was the stick thin partner of a local football player and seemed very glamorous to my 16 year old eyes.  The group of us all wore black lycra from head to toe  with long sleeved tops.  A daring few had three quarter length sleeves, wow!  I learned a lot from my Yoga days though, and practiced first thing in a morning every day for a few years.

Everything changed when aerobics came on the scene.  It became about finding ‘the burn’ and yoga got forgotten for many years.

Here we are many years later and Yoga is back in the trend again.  I find myself wondering why I ever stopped as the benefits are so hugh.

And, for those of you who are wondering.  I love my running, my initial motivation for yoga was to help keep me supple and flexible through the hips.  It took me actually doing the activity called yoga to link back the memories of the fabulous good feeling that stays with you after a yoga session.

I found this interesting article  today and thought some of you who have been thinking of trying yoga, might get your motivation by seeing the amazing benefits.

The Yoga I practiced back in the 70’s was Hatha, but there are lots of different types of yoga including Vispana and Ashtanga.  Some are  slow deliberate moves, held for a while as you relax into the stretch, whilst others are more dynamic and fast moving.  There is also Bikram Yoga, known as hot yoga which is like exercising in a sauna.

I’ve tried them all and have no favourite, it all depends on my mood at the time.

Starting to feel like I should be eating green food and meditating…

Namaste!
