Why I Run

Why do I run?

My first intention was to get a little fitter and lose some body fat.

Eighteen months later and I am still running.  My reasons now are many, for instance, I am 52 years old and had begun to notice a few aches and pains in my joints, particularly my right hip joint and used to have aching feet and ankles when I took my first few steps out of bed in a morning.
This has all disappeared, I now bounce out of bed early every morning without any though of aches or pains in any form.

I have more energy, not only for the things I want to do each day, but also for the things I ought to do, such as cleaning the house or doing the Ironing, these jobs just get done without me feeling tired or lethargic.
Other benefits... oh yeah.. it sure does do wonders for my desire and activity between the sheets!

More importantly, I am more impressed with the effect on my mind, whatever has happened in my life, whatever stress might be around, I just find that popping on my trainers and pounding the pavements soon gets the serotonin  cursing through out my body resulting in my feeling wonderful! this is also the time when I am at my most creative, new thoughts and Ideas seem to come into my head from nowhere, resulting in my arriving home inspired and energized!

I do feel a little guilty about using my increased fitness as a licence to eat what ever I want, particularly chocolate or smarties to be precise. The good thing is that my weight is healthy and most of my diet is healthy and nutritious so I am not going to worry about my smartie addiction too much at the moment.  (I could also hypnotise myself to find them repulsive but I am enjoying them too much at the moment)

What else... Oh yes, there is also the social aspect to running, especially being a member of Lazy Runners, owned by the lovely Marie who motivates me and the others to improve our running distance, speed and strength three times a week!

If all this is tempting you to get your running shoes on and hit the streets, then I am pleased, but recognize, that if you have not run at all in your life, that it is best to take it slowly.  just do a couple of miles, running and walking intermittently, perhaps jogging to one lamppost or tree, then walking to the next. Before long you will be jogging for two lamppost distances and then three... and  before long you will be running 5k.
running has got to be one of the cheapest ways of keeping fit, The only item that I would insist that you spend your dollars are on are a pair of running shoes to fit your feet.  Get your feet measured at a specialist shop before starting your running programme.

Now its time for my bed, but not before I arrange my running gear ready for my early morning training session...then as soon as I awaken.. I am immediately aware of how good I will feel as I am showering after my run, feeling the blood coursing through my body releasing energy to every cell in my body...

Have a happy Monday!
